Pigmentvlekken na de zomer: zo pak je ze aan

Summer dark spots: how to tackle them

After a summer full of sun, you may suddenly notice pigmentation spots on your face. Where do these spots come from, and what can you do about them?

Sun, warmth, and plenty of fresh air: summer is wonderful, but it demands a lot from your skin. After summer, you might discover signs of sun damage, such as hyperpigmentation. While your summer routine mainly focuses on protection, the autumn shifts attention to recovery.

Autumn is a good time to soften hyperpigmentation and tailor your routine to renewal, calm, and a more even skin tone.

What does summer do to your skin?

We all know that skin darkens in the summer. This happens because sunlight stimulates the production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color and helps protect it from UV radiation. But what many people don't know is that this pigment production isn't always even. More pigment can accumulate in certain spots, leading to visible discolorations.

This can have various causes. Sunspots primarily appear on areas of the skin that have received a lot of UV radiation over the years. In melasma, hormones and predisposition also play a role in addition to sunlight. And after acne, eczema, or other irritation, extra pigment can remain at the site of the inflammation. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Your skin type also determines how pigment changes manifest. In fair skin, sunspots often become noticeable more quickly, while in skin with more melanin, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is relatively more common and can remain visible for longer.

Moreover, summer affects more processes in the skin than just pigment production. UV radiation causes oxidative stress and burdens the skin. This can exacerbate pigment differences and is one of the reasons why good sun protection remains important, even after summer is over.

Why autumn is a good time for pigment care

Pigment spots usually don't just appear after summer. Often, they become more visible then: as your tanned skin lightens again, you might suddenly notice that some spots remain darker for longer.

Autumn is therefore a good time to give extra attention to pigment differences. The sun is less intense, and daily UV exposure decreases. Meanwhile, the skin continues to renew and repair itself naturally. With skincare that supports these processes, you can soften pigment differences and work towards a more even skin tone.

What helps against hyperpigmentation?

To reduce hyperpigmentation, you can support various processes in the skin. Some ingredients influence pigment processes, while others support skin renewal and a strong skin barrier.

  • Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, is a widely used ingredient for hyperpigmentation and is also well-researched. It inhibits the transfer of melanin from pigment cells to surrounding skin cells. As a result, dark discolorations can gradually become less visible. Additionally, niacinamide supports the skin barrier, reducing moisture loss.

  • Glycoin® is based on glyceryl glucoside, a substance found in plants that have adapted to extreme conditions. It supports the vitality of skin cells and processes involved in skin renewal and repair.

  • CutiGuard CLR™ is a biotechnologically developed ingredient that supports the skin's natural protective mechanisms. Research shows that it helps the skin cope with UV radiation, air pollution, and temperature fluctuations. It also contributes to a more even skin tone and a healthy skin balance.

Autumn routine for even skin

You don't need a complicated routine to support the skin's natural repair and pigment processes after summer. With a few targeted steps, you can give your skin rest and work towards a more even skin tone.

  1. Cleanse gently. Choose a gentle cleanser that removes dirt, sebum, and SPF residues without drying out the skin.

  2. Apply a serum for pigment differences. A serum with niacinamide can gradually make dark discolorations less visible while simultaneously supporting the skin barrier. skjur®'s Anti-Pigment Serum combines niacinamide with ingredients that support skin renewal and repair.

  3. Finish with a nourishing cream. Choose a cream that intensely hydrates and also supports the skin barrier, so the skin loses less moisture and remains resilient against external influences.

  4. Continue to use SPF during the day. Even in autumn, UV radiation can darken pigment spots and stimulate new discolorations. Daily sun protection therefore remains a fixed step in your autumn routine.

  5. Give your skin time. Pigment differences fade gradually. Consistent use of a simple routine usually works better than constantly switching between many different active ingredients.

Even after a summer full of sun, the skin continues to renew itself and gradually correct pigment differences. With daily SPF, targeted ingredients, and a simple routine, you support this natural recovery and give your skin the space to become more even and calmer again.
