Summer skincare routine: how to care for your skin during hot weather and holidays

In the summer, sun, salt, and air conditioning weaken your skin barrier. Keep it simple: cleanse gently, moisturize, and protect daily with SPF.

Want to enjoy the summer sun to the fullest and still maintain healthy, calm skin? It's possible. And you don't need an elaborate routine with all sorts of steps or products, because especially in warm weather, your skin needs simplicity. In this article, you'll read how minimalist skincare can optimally support your summer skin.

In the summer months or during a sunny trip, you might experience troubled skin. Your skin can feel oily one moment and dry and tight the next. Pimples or changes in pigmentation also occur more frequently in warm weather.

Why your skin is often troubled in summer

What causes this? A major cause: moisture loss. Due to the warmth, moisture evaporates more quickly from the skin. At the same time, sunlight, wind, seawater, and air conditioning can temporarily weaken the skin barrier, making the skin less able to retain moisture.

Dermatologists also see more people with summer acne in the summer. The skin often produces more sebum at higher temperatures. In combination with sweat and oily sunscreen, this can lead to pores becoming clogged more quickly, resulting in pimples or a mild rash.

Minimalist skincare in summer

Summer conditions unknowingly demand a lot from your skin. That's why it's especially important not to overload your skin with too many products and active ingredients. Effective skincare in summer is not about more care, but about targeted support.

Basically, this comes down to two things: sun protection and hydration. Protection against UV radiation is essential to prevent skin damage. With extra hydration, you simultaneously ensure that your skin remains supple and does not dry out. Keep the rest of your routine simple, with light textures, natural formulas, and a limited number of active ingredients. This way, your skin is less likely to become overloaded and has room to regulate itself.

Summer skincare routine: 4 steps

Caring for your skin in the sun doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming. With just a few steps, you can give your summer skin exactly the support it needs.

1. Gentle cleansing
In summer or on vacation, more residue remains on your skin, for example from sweat, sebum, sand, salt water, and sun protection. Therefore, cleanse your skin well. Choose a mild cleanser that is gentle on the skin barrier and protects the skin from dehydration and heat stress, for example with ectoine as one of the active ingredients.

3. Sun protection
Sun protection is the most important step in your summer routine. Choose a light formula that feels pleasant and absorbs quickly, such as a serum with broad-spectrum SPF. A sun serum with ingredients like ectoine and antioxidants not only offers protection against UV radiation but also against other negative effects of sun exposure.

2. Eye care
The skin around the eyes is thinner and more sensitive than the rest of the face. Therefore, after your sun protection, apply a light eye care product. This will keep this delicate skin supple and hydrated.

4. Hydrating cream
Support your face, neck, and décolleté daily with a hydrating day and night cream. Choose formulas that hydrate both the upper and deeper skin layers, for example, with short-chain hyaluronic acid as an active ingredient. Ectoine also provides good protection against dehydration and heat stress.

Are you in the sun for an extended period? Then apply sun protection regularly throughout the day. This way, your skin remains protected from sun damage, and you can enjoy the summer weather without worry.
